Colour Trends in International Markets
Working in the custom carpet business for over 25 years, it always delights me to work in a country for the first time. Part of the fascination is to discover the specific colour inclinations of that country. In Brazil I suspected they would want bright red tones, but no, cool greys were of most interest. However, I have found there is always a need for strong clear colours in Bermuda and the Caribbean because greys and browns look dull in that setting. Interestingly, even for area rugs in Canada, there are significant differences between the cities of Vancouver and Toronto. Vancouver with lush rainforest located nearby can handle more intense colour, whereas Toronto area rugs tend towards more subtle tones.

Ice forms
Considering design inspiration for unique carpets, I see the captivating shapes of ice - from the majestic glaciers of the north to tiny crystals in their molecular form - continuing to inspire. Cool neutrals are the catalyst that instills a quiet sophistication to these complex structures. Contour lines captured in vast, icy landscapes offer a soft contrast to the hard-edged facets.

Colour Blocking
A huge trend in fashion design for the past few seasons, colour blocking is when multiple blocks of solid colours are worn together in one outfit. The concept is simple but the effect can be very dramatic. We are now seeing colour blocking transition into interior design and custom carpets are a great way to incorporate this trend into your home!

Handmade carpets
Internationally renowned trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort recently republished an essay predicting that craft products will flourish in 2015 as a way of getting back to our original selves in an ever-more complex and information-riddled society. Handknotted carpets are a perfect example of a craft that will increasingly attract the computer-weary and comfort them with the tactile pleasure of natural fibres. With this in mind, late last year, we announced our Natural Dye Carpet Collection - area rugs handknotted in Nepal with the Tibetan knot weaving technique, adopted from Tibetan refugees forced to flee the Chinese invasion in the 1950s. Organic dyes from hand harvested plants stirred in open pots add to the ritualistic qualities in the making of the craft object which Edelkoort says will become more important.

Soft Geometry
The painterly trend will continue into 2015 with sketched, watercolour and block printed geometrics. They'll appear in full colour in fashion and as quieter calmer textures on area rugs and wallcoverings. Loosely repeated hand drawn stripes, blurred dots and intersecting lines will be prominent.

Graphic Tribalism
Last year was strong with Berber area rugs, and this trend will continue in 2015 getting more powerful through graphic tribal patterns and details. Contemporary zigzags, softened by sophisticated and delicate tones, will be woven into timeless dhurries.
