Frequently clients come to us with creative inspiration for their new custom floor coverings. They might verbalize their ideas or have images, colour swatches or finishes presented in a mood board. It then becomes our mission to elevate this concept, to provide the client with everything they asked for and perhaps take that idea even further.

Is a floor covering the main character in a room or a supporting character? This is one of the questions our designers ponder as they embark on a new project. For them every carpet is a work of art on the floor but they always remain aware of their client’s bigger picture.

Original artwork is at the heart of Creative Matters – it’s what we are known for, it’s what we like doing most, and it’s what we do best. We nurture this skill in our team at regular Art Days where we leave our computers behind and gather together to create based on a theme or technique. Designing, whether it be for custom projects or our own rug collections, is a meticulous process where we rise to every challenge.

For the Ritz-Carlton Mexico City’s exquisite corridor carpet inspired by traditional sacred smoke rituals and how they cleanse the body and mind, note how the elegant movement from one shape to the next carries you down the corridor. This applies to any of the ten floors even though each is structured differently. For every floor we prepared a detailed technical layout indicating where seams in the carpet could be hidden without interfering with the design.

When designing custom floor coverings for interior spaces, we are highly aware how lighting can affect the way in which the content (wool, silk, shiny nylon, etc.) and the colour appear in its final location. When planning the carpets for the recently-completed Pendry Manhattan West hotel, the interior designer made us well aware of the detailed lighting plan for each of the locations within the hotel.

Not only is this Creative Matters carpet for the foyer at Four Seasons Resort Whistler a stunning design, it is also made in the woven Axminster method of construction that will ensure the carpet stays looking this good for many years to come. Many carpets use both pile and backing that provide acceptable durability but it’s the weaving element of construction that sets Axminster apart.
