LUMINOUS LAYERS: EXPLORING DEEP RICH HUES AND SUBTLE SHEEN

In 2023, Creative Matters collaborated with Arcadis to create a custom reception rug for a corporate office in Toronto. Working with Jane Juranek, one of the lead designers from Arcadis, the project required an organic yet sophisticated rug for the foyer. The design featured a dynamic play of low loop pile heights up to 9mm, enhancing texture and comfort. The final installation seamlessly integrated metallic details and deep rich hues, transforming the space into a welcoming environment that reflects the office's aesthetic.

Crafting a Luxurious and Sustainable Reception Rug

The design of the reception rug combines artistic vision with practicality and sustainability. Handtufted in Thailand using 80% wool and 20% prism nylon, the rug is not only durable but also exudes a luxurious feel enhancing the overall aesthetic of the space. Ana Cunningham, managing partner at Creative Matters, emphasizes, "We wanted to create a design that resonated with both organic textures and modern aesthetics while incorporating a rich colour palette.”

Ana further explains, “Prism nylon was used to add a sheen, particularly in the blossom area, while wool was chosen for its natural stain resistance, acoustic properties, and environmental benefits such as allergen and VOC absorption.” Enhancing the rug's functionality in a high-traffic corporate setting. The overlapping patterns and deep, rich colours further evoke a sense of depth and sophistication.

Harmonizing Colours

The colours for the reception rug were specifically chosen to harmonize with the office's interior finishes, warm wood floors and metallic accents. The client was particularly drawn to the overlapping details and the depth created by the dark background. Material samples and palettes were reviewed at the Arcadis office during the design process, ensuring the colours seamlessly integrated with the finishes selected for the space.

From Concept to Completion

Sophie Williams, Creative Matters’ senior designer, shares, "My favourite element of this design was the strategic placement around the furniture. It was rewarding to piece together elements that complemented the seating arrangement and enhanced the overall flow of the space." Sophie adds, "Seeing the rug installed in person and witnessing it rolled out was incredibly gratifying.”

From start to finish, it was a pleasure collaborating with Jane Juranek, Kas Marquez and Fernanda Dolci to bring this incredible custom rug to life.
