CRAFTING UNDERSTATEMENT WITH RDAI

It is often the quietest elements that make the most impact in a home. At a private residence in Miami, RDAI, the Paris-based design firm, partnered with Creative Matters to conceive custom rugs for the living room and guest room, embodying elegance and intention.

Through thoughtful materiality, subtle patterning and an understanding of how people live at home, Creative Matters shows why bespoke floor coverings are essential to elevated residential design.

UNITY UNDERFOOT

Crafted for a private Miami residence's living room, the custom rugs serve as an anchor, subtle yet essential to the home's architectural rhythm. Handtufted with New Zealand wool and Chinese silk in Thailand, the piece features a radial motif, originally imagined by RDAI, that complements the furniture layout and the movement of natural light. The warm sand colour palette with soft, golden beige tones gently grounds the composition with understated warmth and harmony. Clémence Hardelay, Creative Matters’ Director of Design Europe, led this project. She explains, “The rug becomes a unifying element, elevating architectural details and making the entire space feel logical and cohesive. Customization also allows us to fine-tune colours to perfectly match the finishes throughout the home.”

FROM CONCEPT TO CUSTOM RUGS

The collaboration between RDAI and Creative Matters was defined by dialogue, precision and trust. Digital collaboration, accompanied by physical yarn samples and production prototypes that crossed continents to ensure every detail aligned with RDAI’s original intent. “It was an iterative process,” says Clémence. “From achieving the exact radius of the line work to refining tonal shifts and texture, each stage involved careful feedback loops between our teams. The result is a floor covering that feels fully integrated with RDAI’s architectural language, one that is quietly supportive and never competing.”

Material selection is both an art and a science. Creative Matters brings clarity to this process, guiding designers through the language of fibre – our mother tongue. We consider durability, texture, sheen, and the way a fibre responds to light. A rug is not static; it is a grounded layer which absorbs the rhythms of daily life over time.

Colour became a defining element in the dialogue between design and material. Achieving harmony with the home’s interior finishes required a considered approach. It is here, where creative vision meets technical fluency, where custom rugs reveal their full expression.

BEAUTY AND FUNCTIONALITY IN BALANCE

Designing custom rugs for residential spaces is an exercise in balance where aesthetics and performance meet. Creative Matters has honed this experience over decades, where design is shaped by an understanding of scale, movement and the rituals of daily life. “From a design standpoint, I like to highlight specific elements within a pattern, whether it is the subtle texture or a strategic use of silk to create visual interest. The material must also support the function, durability, ease of maintenance and suitability for the space,” said Clémence.

In collaboration with RDAI, this philosophy took on a new dimension, where every detail is deliberate and each material decision becomes part of an architectural language that elevates the experience of home.
