BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE HAMPTON RUG, SHOWCASED IN LUXURY BOUTIQUE CABINE
Cabine is one of Toronto’s most regarded fashion purveyors, nestled in the city’s luxury shopping district of Yorkville. Founded by Nicholas Mellamphy, the appointment-only retail experience is decorated by a curated collection of furniture from Toronto’s top contemporary designer destinations, with the walls showcasing quarterly exhibitions featuring art from internationally recognized artists. The Cabine space is residential in feel and private club-like in association. During a quarterly exhibition hand-selected by interior designer Dimitri Chris, laid one of Creative Matters’ custom rugs, the Hampton.
This design was born from a collaboration between Creative Matters and interior designer Sarah Richardson. The design was created for our Campaign for Wool Canada collection to showcase 100% Canadian wool with playful colour and an intriguing soumak weave texture.
With insights from Creative Matters’ project manager Carol Sebert and Creative Matters’ designer Anna Panosyan, we explore the story behind this textile floor art.
Interior designer Dimitri Chris chose our Hampton rug as an additional work of art for this colourful space. Creative Matters’ founder Carol Sebert shares “In this type of space, you can really see how the Hampton Rug was the right level of playful colours and texture. We were thrilled to have the Hampton Rug be a part of this exclusive space. It is terrific to have established partners in the interior design industry also giving visibility to Canadian wool.”
At the heart of the project stands Creative Matters’ Design Development Director Anna Panosyan. The inspiration for this rug came from a photograph of a floral composition at the Hampton Court Palace, provided by interior designer Sarah Richardson.
“Once Sarah’s team provided the concept direction, I translated the likeness and texture of the wild meadow into an artwork that would be crafted into a handwoven rug,” says Panosyan. “We selected a soumak woven technique for an interesting texture to elevate the abstracted floral design. The final result looks spectacular in terms of the contrast of light and colour. I feel as though, when looking at this, I am transported behind the lens of Sarah’s camera on that sunny day at Hampton Court Palace.”
Creative Matters’ Hampton Rug exemplifies the transformative power of art, especially when accompanied by Cabine’s expertly curated art, fashion and furniture collections.
