STRIKING SHAPED RUGS ELEVATE CONDO SPACES
We were delighted when Arcadis IBI Group asked us to collaborate with them again, this time on three shaped rugs for the new Azura condo building in Toronto. Their Associate Director Heidi Rose provided us with the specific shapes that they had designed to enhance the interior architecture. “We then recommended the handtufted method of production to accommodate the unique shapes and provide the necessary durability for a hospitality setting,” said Sandra Ciganic-McKinney, Creative Director at Creative Matters. All three rugs are made in New Zealand wool at our mill in Thailand. The accents have been interpreted with budget-friendly prism nylon rather than silk.”
THE PARTY ROOM RUG
The abstract geometric rug for the party room (see photo above) is a customized version of the Suspension design from our XXV Collection. “Many of the rugs in the collections can be customized in size, shape, method of construction, fibre, scale of the design and colour,” said Sandra. “Originally a handknotted, rectangular rug, this one also changed colour palette.”
Although the original Suspension design called for a consistent cut pile, the customized version added textural variation with its 6 mm cut and 6 mm loop piles with raised 8 mm cut pile. “The rug adds soft texture and warmth to the party room and the organic aspects of the design contrast well with the prominent structural lighting that cascades down from the ceiling,” said Sandra.
THE LOBBY RUG
For the lobby rug, the client supplied a rendering of a rug design in the space. We then provided them with a few different concepts based on their rendering and they selected the one shown below. “It’s a gestural ebb and flow design,” said Kayla Bortolotto, Senior Designer on the project. “Energy can be felt from the obvious movement in the design, and the radial moon shape gradient in the background gives a bold contrast against the gold lineal details, creating depth and space.”
“To achieve the deep teal gradient we used more than 60 colours,” said Kayla. “The colours of the rug pull together the finishes of the space - the gold lines relating to the golden clad reception desk and the teals of the seating area.”
THE CHILDREN’S PLAYROOM RUG
The playroom rug creates a distinct soft area to play on that is inviting for children. In 7 mm cut and loop pile, its oval shape was designed to fit perfectly within the wall structure. Graphic organic lines overlap and intertwine with one another. “Subtle outlines in a single silver tuft line of loop pile of the lines add to this playful design,” said Kayla.
