In 2019, international design firm Yabu Pushelberg (YP) was commissioned with the complete renovation of one of New York’s landmarks, the Park Lane New York hotel. YP is a long time client of Creative Matters and that same year they asked us to work with them on the carpets which were installed in early 2022. Partner Ali McMurter managed the collaboration at our end. “They chose us for the project because they knew we could work in several different techniques for the different types of areas they were working on and knew we would do an excellent job interpreting their designs,” she said.

Park Lane New York is a 47-storey, 610 room hotel with post-war architecture and panoramic views of Central Park. YP’s focus was to breathe new life into it without taking away from its original identity. “We enjoyed working with Cody Kullman, Sophia Chen and Roger Tien at YP and it was particularly interesting to hear how they intended to maintain the hotel’s historical integrity,” said Ali.

EVENT SPACE (pictured above)

For the event space, YP chose a botanical design. “We developed the background textures and recommended the production colours,” said Ali. “This is my favourite carpet from the project because it is whimsical, beautiful and suits its location so well.” The carpet was made with dye injected nylon which offers durability and design versatility. And its tip sheared loop pile offers the visual appeal of both texture and pattern.

PREFUNCTION CORRIDOR AND STAIRS

For the prefunction corridor and stairs we developed a a grey fade in the same dye injected nylon. “We only had 12 colours for the entire order so we needed to work with a very carefully selected palette,” said Ali.

GUEST ROOM CORRIDORS

Exuding effortless style in just three colours, the carpet for the guest room corridors was made with machine tufted loop and cut pile in solution dyed nylon. This combination ensures a durable and economical floor covering.

LOBBY

For good looks and durability, the lobby rug was handtufted in 100% wool in Thailand. We developed the smooth ombre using peacock blues in no less than 53 blends.

An ombre rug brings understated sophistication to the lobby.

“This was a fun project with a very creative and receptive team at YP,” said Ali. “And I would be amiss if I didn’t also mention the skillful coordination by Ryan Gibbon and Mike Westervelt at the purchasing agency HPG.”
