“Immerse yourself in the elegance of art deco and the warmth of mahogany wood. The opulent surroundings are designed to heighten your senses …,” proclaims the website of Vancouver’s Gotham Steakhouse & Bar. We were delighted to play our role in creating this special ambiance.

Design Development Director Anna Pannosyan worked closely with Elaine Thorsell, owner of BOTI Interiors, to conjure up a design for a large swath of carpet that stretched from the main dining room, up the stairs to the mezzanine and into a private dining room.

“The direction from Elaine was to create a clean dynamic geometric design that would feel slightly modernistic, art deco like,” said Anna. “The design we agreed upon evokes patterns of light and shadows cast by light fixtures. Seven colours vie for attention in a gradation from copper to jet black.”

Woven Axminster in a 80% wool, 20% nylon mix was a natural choice for this large hospitality space. Axminster carpets are named after a type of hand-weave style that originated during the latter part of the 18th century in the English town of Axminster. The current machine-made process was pioneered in the 1950s. Each tuft of yarn is woven and locked into place by shots of backing yarn. This creates a strong three-dimensional structure that is renowned for its durability and suitability for high traffic areas. The yarn is dyed before production allowing deep rich tones of colour.

“The client was so pleased with the outcome of this project, she subsequently worked with us on another upscale steakhouse,” said Anna.
