A New Thread: B Corp Certified

Creative Matters is now a Certified B Corporation. The certification means our business has been assessed against B Lab’s standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It brings external scrutiny to a question that belongs at the centre of design: how do we create work of lasting value while taking responsibility for the way it comes into being?

That responsibility takes shape through daily decisions: how we support our team, work with production partners and choose the materials we bring into a space. As Creative Matters has grown, these decisions have become more complex, and our understanding of their consequences has deepened. B Corp certification gives us a framework for examining those choices, measuring our progress and identifying where we need to do better.

Creative Matters’ Managing Partners, Ali McMurter and Ana Cunningham

For Managing Partners Ana Cunningham and Ali McMurter, moving from design into leadership has brought more of those decisions into view. The work now includes carefully cultivating the conditions in which good design can happen: giving people room to develop, questioning established processes and deciding where to invest time and resources. Their experience within Creative Matters informs what they want to preserve, and what they want to improve as the studio grows.

“Experiencing the business from multiple perspectives over time, from designer to project manager to managing partner, has provided us valuable insight into the evolution of our people, processes and business. This perspective allows us to build on our foundation, continuously improve how Creative Matters operates, and strengthen how we present ourselves to clients and stakeholders,” said Ana Cunningham, Managing Partner, Creative Matters.

The people behind our purpose: the Creative Matters team.

Certified in September 2026, Creative Matters earned a B Impact Score of 102 through an assessment covering governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The process asked us to look across the company and supply B Corp with details about how we support our team, work with production partners, serve clients and consider the wider consequences of our decisions.

For us, good design and responsible business are not separate ambitions. We believe the objects and spaces we bring into the world should be considered not only for their beauty, but for how they are made, who makes them and the relationships that make their creation possible.

Becoming a Certified B Corporation is part of our ongoing commitment to that belief: continually examining our impact on our people, partners, communities and planet, while finding better ways to design, collaborate and create. Because what we weave into the world matters.

For clients, certification offers another way to understand the company behind a commission. Supporting the design and finished piece is a business whose practices have undergone assessment, and whose leadership has committed to considering the people affected by its decisions.

There is satisfaction in reaching this milestone, alongside a clear understanding that our ambitions will take time. Growth brings competing demands, and translating a conviction into a policy, a budget or a daily habit requires sustained attention. For a fuller picture of the progress behind this milestone, our Sustainability Report one-pager brings together our 2025 impact data and outlines the commitments and standards that underpin our B Corp certification.

B Corp certification is led by Teri Ly, Sustainability Liaison at Creative Matters.

“Much of the certification process involved documenting practices that were already part of Creative Matters, while identifying where we could go further. It gave us a clearer understanding of our responsibilities to our team, our production partners and the communities connected to our work,” says Teri Ly, Sustainability Liaison at Creative Matters, who led the B Corp certification process.

Our next steps include sharing more of what we learned with the studio team and preparing a climate action plan with defined timelines. Both will help us connect broader commitments to the decisions we make together.

We approach this work with the same attentiveness we bring to design: looking closely, asking questions and allowing what we learn to shape what comes next.
