A PINCH-ME MOMENT: CREATIVE MATTERS’ MILAN DESIGN WEEK DEBUT

April marked a major month for Creative Matters as we made our grand debut at Fuorisalone’s Milan Design Week. From April 16 - 21, we participated in the exceptional Menu 1 exhibition, hosted by COVER Magazine and Salon Magazine and curated by London-based designer Bodo Sperlein.

This year’s innovative Fuorisalone theme was Materia Natura. Our Redoux Passager installation, originally created using handtufted custom rugs for Paris Design Week 2023 in partnership with Paris design studio LOMA, was on display among an impressive array of works portraying innovation, craftsmanship and sustainability in design.

Menu 1 took place in Convento Sant’Angelo, near the iconic Brera district, known for its world-renowned design exhibits. Creative Matters’ Director of Design Europe, Clémence Hardelay and Senior Designer Laurie François were thrilled to be present at the renowned exhibition alongside LOMA’s Johan Brunel, Nicolas Omet and Théa Schiffers.

REDOUX PASSAGER: MILAN DESIGN WEEK’S TRANQUIL OASIS

Inside the Convento Sant’Angelo’s cloister, surrounded by serene garden terraces and the melody of bells, the Redoux Passager exhibit took centre stage. This immersive installation comprises an array of vibrant blue rugs, poetically shedding light on Creative Matters’ dedication to water stewardship, using a collection of sustainable and natural materials such as silk, wool and wood.

“The Convento Sant’Angelo exhibition offered visitors a tranquil and enchanting experience. Menu 1’s showcase provided a calming pause among the excitement and bustle. The sun filtering through the leaves and softly reflecting onto Redoux Passager made the installation come alive, bringing a sparkle to the water-inspired design,” Clémence shared.

In Milan, Redoux Passager led visitors through a calming oasis, calling them to reflect on the question of sustainability and the management of water as a natural resource. When creating this installation, the team reflected on how precious water is to our rug production.

We prioritize water conservation when choosing our rug manufacturing partners. This is exemplified in our Thai mill. This mill, responsible for most of our handtufted floor coverings, has two ponds to capture rainwater, aiming to divert up to 3,580,000 litres of water from the city sewage system in the coming year, conserving rain water and using this natural resource to protect and support the local community. It treats used water with organic compounds, avoiding harsh chemicals, and pumps the excess to nearby farms.

MARKING A MAJOR MILESTONE

“When Creative Matters received an invitation to exhibit at Convento Sant’Angelo, we eagerly accepted. Bringing our Redoux Passager installation to Milan, which we aim to share globally, is a huge milestone. This prestigious event unites established firms, emerging talent and a large design industry community. Being part of this renowned event for the first time is truly an honour for Creative Matters,” Clémence Hardelay shared.

It’s no secret Italy, particularly Milan, has been a leader in iconic design showcases for centuries, emerging as a powerhouse since the creation of Salone del Mobile in 1961 and Fuorisalone in the early 1980s. This year’s Fuorisalone theme, Materia Natura, brought together cutting-edge creations to captivate and inspire design aficionados from an array of renowned brands including Coordonné, Weishäupl, and more.

We could not be happier with our successful Milan Design Week debut. Creative Matters truly left its mark on Italy’s design landscape and we cannot wait to return.
