THE 2016 RUG DESIGNS FOR THE PERENNIAL COLLECTION

The Perennial Collection of wool and silk handknotted rugs first hit the floors at the New York International Carpet Show in September 2015. We then proudly displayed seven more designs at the European shows in early 2016. In the Perennial look book, we describe the collection as a "yearning for summer's bounty after Canada's prolonged polar chill."

Flowers have formed the basis of rug designs for hundreds of years, but as you would expect from our studio, we've interpreted them with a distinct urban vibe. While the shapes and colours of some designs have a beguiling strength, the ephemerality of petals is perfectly expressed in our careful placement of silk.

NEW DESIGNS IN THE PERENNIAL COLLECTION

THE EMERGE RUG DESIGN

When asked to choose a current favourite from the Collection, President Carol Sebert said, "Emerge plum is exquisite. There's a fine line surrounding the pattern that provides a definition - thin layers of glass come to mind ..." The Perennial Collection was launched at the same time as the Arctic Collection, and Emerge is the design that unites the two. With its warm lavender and gold tones "emerging” throughout, this delicate, pretty design was a big success at the European trade shows.

THE RUCHE RUG DESIGN

Ruche was released in 2016 in Pastel and Plum. Based on lisianthus - a rose-like flower that naturally occurs in purple, blue, white and pink - we worked to create a contemporary rendition of real flowers that were not too abstract. There is an intentional paradox between the two colourways. Pastel is lighthearted and playful while Plum is the introverted twin.

THE HYDRANGEA - INDIGO RUG DESIGN

The first Hydrangea design was released in the Charcoal colourway with fluffy white flowers set against a tempestuous background. Carol said it was the more predictable rendition and the new Indigo version - deep blue flowers on a pale cloudy background - is a wonderful surprise. "I have always loved black flowers, and even though hydrangea are never black in nature, this design has that otherworldly quality of a photographic negative. I adore this effect!"

THE VIVA - PASTEL RUG DESIGN

This explosion of printed flowers was first released in the Ochre colourway (mustard and purple tones) before the artisans in Nepal started knotting away on Pastel. An urban take on nature, Carol said, "Viva - Pastel is lovely and soft. With its delicate colouration, it is perfect for a quiet space. The silk purple, teal and gold tones balance beautifully on the warm grey background."

THE ROSE - TECHNICOLOUR RUG DESIGN

We are excited to announce that the interiors team at the U.S. daily lifestyle panel TV show "FABLife" discovered this design online and asked to use it (along with some of our other rugs) in their May 19 show.

For such a dramatic rug, Carol suggests it is a surprisingly versatile piece. "I can see Rose - Technicolour in almost any residential setting, from a bedroom carpet to a family room. The coordinating furniture and fabrics could pick up any of the 20 colours in this design. Its ebullient pattern would give a lift to any room, small or large."

Perennial now joins five other collections in our online portfolio. Collection rugs are available from our retailers in regular sizes but read here to find out how we can customize any of these rugs in size, shape, colour and design.
