SNEAK PEEK AT A NEW COLLECTION

poms.jpg

As we write 11 new rug designs are currently on the looms in Nepal. Talented weavers are recreating our two-dimensional compositions into textural beauties comprising thousands of hand-tied knots in wool and silk. Due for delivery in early September, they will form our Halcyon Collection.

The word halcyon comes from a story in Greek mythology about the halcyon bird which had the power to calm the rough ocean waves every December so she could nest. Like those calm waters, halcyon has come to mean a sense of peace or tranquility. We chose this name for our tenth collection because this is what our designers felt as they first handled the samples that arrived from Nepal.

Before the weavers begin their magic on the 8’ x 10’ rugs, the mills send 2’ x 3’ samples so we can review and edit any details until perfection is achieved. Today we reveal six of the Halcyon designs in closeup photos of the samples. Balthazar (above) is a blend of eight grey tones from charcoal through to dove circulating harmoniously around pools of silken pearl.

Our collection rugs are always handknotted in the finest natural materials - Tibetan wool, Chinese silk and in the above example, a touch of linen. Our designers choose very carefully which parts of the design will be wool and which will be silk. Marlowe (above) has silk and the addition of linen in white and soft pink sprinkled over the gentle wash of grey tones.

Eva (above) is a design where neutrals graze calmly, but with ribbons of powder blue surprising as teal and wheat mingle. All 11 designs of the collection will be delivered to our studio early September in time for the opening of the first-ever Creative Matters showroom! Conveniently located above our studio in Toronto, the light-filled space will display and honour many of our finest floor and wallcoverings.

Samples of Guadalupe (above) reveal six blue colours floating amicably in a sea of warm neutrals. Many of the Halcyon designs - including Guadalupe - originate from our Art Days when the entire Creative Matters team escapes their computers and create art in a traditional way.

Theodore (above) epitomizes the Halcyon Collection with strong shades that are so artfully combined they feel hushed. We love that our handknotted rugs are made by artisans in Nepal using a weaving tradition that has been handed down over hundreds of years. We also love that they meet the highest social and environmental standards thanks to our fair trade partnership with Label STEP.

To complete the sneak peek we present Estelle. Distinguished by soothing filaments in cloud white floating calmly above a luxurious bed. We hope you will have the opportunity to see all the designs of the Halcyon Collection in the new showroom.
