CHAIR AFFAIR 2010
From Warehouse Ho Hum to Gorgeous While Raising $2,000.00 for a Worthy Cause Chair Affair Auction for the Furniture Bank - October 21, 2010 Creative Matters was delighted to join the Furniture Bank at the Steam Whistle Brewery, on Thursday October 21, for the First Annual Chair Affair Auction. Creative Matters was part of a large group of local artists invited to take an ordinary chair from the Furniture Bank warehouse and turn it into a piece of art. After a jury process our chair was one of eight chosen for the live auction.
Jack Layton as the auctioneer encouraged the bidding from the room filled with designers, artists and people who believe in this worthy cause - all in the effort to raise finances for this honourable charity. “The concept for the chair was born from the natural approach that Creative Matters takes when embarking on any new rug design project that we receive.
Each Creative Matters client presents a blank canvas – in this case a chair. Our aim was to present a beautiful and luxurious product to our client by taking care to work through the processes of design which result in the finest end product available. Our chair was upholstered with fine linen and 100% silk rug piece that was hand-woven in Nepal.
The stitching is a whimsical element that represents the early stages of our design process where we sketch concepts or motifs for visual direction. The beautiful fabrics, golden-hued wooden legs and Dupioni silk buttons are all pieces of inspiration that a client may give us to work from. These elements, delicately layered together, create a very personalized story that reflects how Creative Matters works, in the form of a luxurious, hand-made chair.” As part of Creative Matters policy to give back to the community, we were delighted to take part in this event. Money raised will be used to support the Furniture Bank, a registered charity that supplies families with gently used furniture while diverting it from landfills.
We are proud to support the Furniture Bank’s vision that demonstrates powerful commitment to building a caring, greener community and empowering the dignity, worth and significance of all families in the Greater Toronto Area. Creative Matters is committed to ethical and socially responsible business practices. The company is a Licensed Importer and member of GoodWeave, a nonprofit foundation working to end illegal child labour in the carpet industry and to offer educational opportunities to children in South Asia (www.goodweave.org).
